SENIORS STILL AVAILABLE

Any of our greyhounds 8 years and older is considered a senior hound. As many of you know, seniors are the best! As anyone that has a Senior will tell you, they are the easiest and most laid-back of ALL greyhounds. They immediately appreciate their home, soft bed, couch, your love and affection. Many do not need to be kenneled, they don't chew like the younger crowd, they have manners, and many never have an accident in the house. They only require love, lots of pets and hugs and just somewhere warm and soft to lie.

For more information on our Seniors and their reduced adoption fee, contact Kelly at kellcar@aol.com

WIGGLES, WAGS & WHISKERS HARNESSES AVAILABLE

These harnesses are specifically designed for greyhounds. They are made very well and have sturdy hardware. The harness is a step-in design and the fit makes it difficult for a greyhound to slip out. Harnesses are wonderful for greyhounds that pull on the lead or for the shy, skittish hounds. By using a harness you are taking the constant pulling on the throat (which could lead to a crushed or damaged trachea over time) and teaching your hound how to walk in balance with you.

A harness gives a shy dog extra safety and security when walking. They are less likely to slip a harness (but you still have to make sure the harness fits snug and secure) and will gain confidence as they learn to walk in a balanced state next to you.

We have a variety of colors to accent any hound color! Harness are $28.00 plus postage.

If you have any questions about a harness or would like to order one, contact Leann at gdoglady@yahoo.com

IS YOUR GREYHOUND A CALENDAR PIN-UP?

The Greyhound Project collects photos for the Celebrating Greyhounds Calendar all year long. It is generally better not to try to enlarge a smaller print. The original is usually clearer and easier to work with. And the calendar staff will have greater success at producing the enlargements than you will.

Please put a label on the back of each photograph you send. The label should include your name, address, the names of the dogs, and the name of the adoption group or other source of the dog. If you got your dogs directly from the racing owner or trainer, that's great; they are just as eligible for the calendar as dogs that are placed by an adoption group. Please label everything. There is nothing more frustrating than sorting through all the photos that we want to use only to find that one of them is anonymous. It's usually one of the really great pictures that we want to use, too.

If you have digital images, they must have been taken at the highest resolution that your camera will produce in order to be acceptable for printing. Please send us a print of the image as well as a copy of the image on a CD. Be sure to note on the label that the picture is also on CD, and include the file name. If you have photos that were taken by someone else, please obtain their written permission for us to use the photos. If the photo was taken at a nursing home or therapy program of some sort, please obtain permission from the program.

The photos for the calendar are selected by a group of Greyhound adopters. The members of the group change from year to year, depending on who is around and wants to come play on the weekend that we gather around a big table and go through the photos. The people looking at the photos generally won't know the people or the dogs in the pictures. They are looking for the images that 'speak' to them.

GREYHOUND HAS SEVERE ADVERSE REACTION TO REVOLUTION - BEWARE

A healthy, five year old greyhound had Pfizer's topical selamectin product, "Revolution" applied, and shortly afterward presented with multiple symptoms: anemia, high kidney and liver values, paresis (partial paralysis). The dog was given steroids and transfusions of platelets, and improved. The dog was tapered off the steroids and he has now crashed again, showing weakness, anemia, other abnormal blood values. The dog's vet has put him back on the steroids. The treatment has already been very expensive, and the dog's owner is afraid that her dog will die or she will be forced to euthanize him due to the growing cost of treatment.

Pfizer agreed to pay for diagnostics but NOT FOR TREATMENT, which has become very costly. The FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine's Adverse Drug Reactions report for this medication, and it lists all of the symptoms this dog has as well as others, including death as adverse reactions that have been seen from Revolution. Also, there are web pages written by other dog owners whose dogs have died or had severe adverse reactions to Revolution. Example lists show several cases where the autopsies showed low platelets and intracranial hemmorrhage as the cause of deaths in dogs who had recently been given Revolution.

The client information offered by Pfizer specifically says that the drug should not be used on "underweight" dogs and most greyhounds fall into that category. It also falls into the "unnecessary risk" category, as it is given for convenience - there are other, much safer drugs that can be used for heartworm prevention and for treatment of the various parasites. (Also in the FDA reports is evidence that it's not completely effective against all the parasites it puports to treat.)

RESCUED RACERS RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD

Purina's Pro Plan Rally to Rescue Program has selected 10 Ambassadors nationwide that "exemplify the spirit of Rally to Rescue" to receive an Ambassador Recognition Award to be presented in Washington, D.C. on May 10th. Rescued Racers was one of the ten groups selected!

This is a great opportunity, not only for Rescued Racers, but for greyhound rescue overall. How exciting to bring not only rescue but greyhound rescue to the attention of our Congressional leaders!
